After the encirclement of the 101st Airborne in Bastogne, Patton's 4th Armored Division spearheaded the assault to relieve the beleaguered defenders of Bastogne. Combat Command B was the tip of the spear headed northeast on the Neufchteau-Bastogne road. The German 7th Army was tasked with protecting the southern flank of the German offensive, with 15th Panzergrendier Division located southwest of Bastogne. It was only a matter of time before the CCB ran into the German panzers of the 15th.
